Alejandro Guanche is a young artist born in Havana, Cuba in 1991. Guanche studied painting in the Academia National de Bellas Artes San Alejandro located in Havana, Cuba and finished his education there in 2011. Guanche’s work has been included in over six group exhibitions, held all around Cuba. He reduces his figures into simple shapes and focuses on the relationships between these colored forms. Utilizing a variety of painting styles, Guanche works to develop a unique presence with his artwork.
Guanche states that a critical component of his work is the color and texture within his paintings and that they in turn distort the reality and affect the manner in which his work communicates with the world and people around the piece. Other artists such as Chuck Close and Sonia Delanay inspire Alejandro Guanche’s work. In Guanche’s “Untitled” paintings, Chuck Close’s influence on this Cuban painter is seen. The figure in the center is sectioned into small squares, with each square presenting a different hue and its own texture where colors visually work together to form an image.
